FRONTISPIECE

Inspired by the beautiful Illuminated geometric frontispieces of Mamluk Qur’ans. The frontispieces of Qurans were elaborately decorated with Gold and luxurious pigments to give high reverence to the Quran as it being the word of God.

The geometry here has been inspired by Oljayatu’s famous Bagdad Quran. This specific geometry is very interesting, as its concept is very different from the typical ‘infinite’ patterns of most Islamic geometric designs. It is based on an eight-fold construction, where the number eight is symbolic of the heavenly gates. An interweaving ribbon has been added to the entire geometric design.
