OTTOMAN KAFTANS

‘Ottoman kaftans’ is a celebration of the beauty of Ottoman textiles, especially of those worn by the Sultans.

Kaftans, are outer robes that were traditionally worn in central Asia and came to Anatolia around the 11-12th century and in the 16th century the textile industry reached its peak.

Sultan Kaftans were of high importance and no expense was spared. The most beautiful and expensive materials were used from the dyes to the fabrics, and were magnificently embellished with gold plated and silver threads.

Usually an atelier within the palaces was set up where highly trained designers would work within highly stringent controls, from the number of warps to the dyes, and designs.
